Luthier Mission Statement

In the early 5th century B.C., Hippocrates a Greek physician and philosopher established quite possibly the first professional oath that bound an individual's motives and actions with regards to medicine to a high ethical standard.  Among the tenants therein is a principle that holds sway across many professions and disciplines; do no harm.

“I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgement and never do harm to anyone.”

— Hippocrates

The art of instrument repair and restoration is ancient and vast.  Books enough to fill libraries contain millenia of wisdom on procedures for repairing a simple crack on an erhu, sackbut, hydraulis, or sitar to improving the sound of lyre, oboe, djembe, or viola de gamba to the rebuilding and complete restoration of a violin by A. Stradivari, a cello by D. Montagnana or a bow by E. Sartory.

Since I have but one life to give, I have decided to dedicate myself to the viols, a bowed string instrument family of violins, violas, cellos, and basses.  Considering the sheer volume of instruments currently in existence and those of antiquity this may seem a paltry offering to the world of music.  I assure it is quite the herculean task to learn adequately how to repair and restore a violin masterpiece by Guarneri del Gesu or Antonio Stradivari, and also to upkeep student instruments in good playing order such that I may arm the next generation of musician.  In my humble opinion, both are of paramount importance.  Poor craftsmanship and lack of sensitivity, vision, and knowledge contribute as much damage to the viol as can the worst accident or tragedy.  Moreover, instruments in poor playing condition can deter promising young talent, the emerging amateur, or the returning connoisseur from pursuing a life fulfilled with music and skill.

My promise to you: I will endeavor to repair and restore your instrument to the best of my abilities. I will not endanger your musical happiness by attempting a repair that is beyond my abilities.  I will answer any and all questions you have regarding the repair process and to explain things in an informative and digestible way.  I will maintain a transparent pricing ethic and endeavor to value my products and services competitively.  Finally, I will continue to advance my knowledge so that I may provide an ever increasing level of quality, expertise, and artistry to my skills as a luthier.
